#8: THE REAL KBH…LEADING CHEERS FOR THE STATUS QUO IS BAD FOR TEXANS’ HEALTH
October 21st, 2009
Texans, more than residents of any other state, are suffering from a dangerous case of partisan Republican flu that has left over six million hard working Texans without health insurance and the highest percent uninsured of any state. Instead of working to solve the problem, KBH has led the cheers for big insurance companies who profit from the status quo, spreading scare tactics and cheap sound bites about a mythical “government takeover” of health care. When you get past all of Hutchison’s hot air, what you’re left with is sickening: since January of this year, 400,000 Texans have lost their health insurance. (Source: Austin American-Statesman)
Kay Bailey Hutchison may try to pass herself off as reasonable, but the real KBH is just another Republican career politician who is bad for Texans’ health:
- Since 2005, KBH has taken $1.4 million from health care special interests – lining her campaign pockets and defending the status quo while millions of Texans go without health care. (Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram via Burnt Orange Report)
- KBH voted against the economic recovery package that provided health benefits to Texans who lost coverage due to the Republican recession – mimicking Rick Perry in a cynical attempt to win support from right wing Republican primary voters at the expense of Texans’ health. - In March, 2009, KBH spoke out against an Appropriations bill that provided $2.6 million for Houston’s world-renowned MD Anderson Cancer facility and a Houston area hospital district, only to later issue a press release taking credit for what she had previously deemed “irresponsible spending and soaring debt obligations.” (Source: Houston Chronicle)
- Adding insult to injury for Texans – and especially seniors, who pay the price for outrageous prescription drug prices – KBH sided with the big pharmaceutical company lobbyists and voted against a bill that required the government to negotiate lower prices with pharmaceutical manufacturers for medications covered under Medicare. (Source: Senate Roll Call)
KBH tries to cast herself as a moderate alternative to Rick Perry, but the record defines the real KBH as another partisan politician who has protected the profits of her special interest cronies while offering no real solutions to reform a system that denies basic health care coverage to millions of Texans.
