RICHIE: ON DNC CHANGE COMMISSION
October 22nd, 2009

Below, please find a statement from Texas Democratic Party Chairman Boyd Richie on this weekend’s DNC Change Commission meeting:

“Texas Democrats were encouraged by the historic participation in our 2008 Democratic primary.  However, the record turnout, while exciting, also stressed the current primary caucus system.  Given the improvements in technology since the current system was established 20 years ago, we realized changes needed to be made. Shortly after the primary, I appointed a committee to carefully review our process and consider changes based on recommendations made by Democrats at meetings and hearings that have been held across the state.

“We are pleased the DNC has taken a strong interest in Texas as Democrats across the nation take notice that we are making progress in our efforts to reclaim what is no longer ‘safe Republican territory.’  Our unprecedented primary turnout was no fluke – we anticipate continued growth in Democratic participation in Texas. I look forward to participating in the DNC Change Commission meeting and the opportunity to encourage enhanced Democratic participation in future Texas elections.”
