#6: THE REAL KBH… ONE FOOT IN, ONE FOOT OUT POLITICS FAILS TEXANS
October 23rd, 2009
The Governor’s mansion is not a retirement home, despite what Kay Bailey Hutchison may think. KBH’s waffling over whether she will resign her U.S. Senate seat to run for Governor is insulting to Texas voters.
Texas has the highest rate of people without health care in the country, yet Hutchison claims that by staying in Washington D.C. and voting against health care reform she is helping Texans – when she is really making it worse. (Source: KRLD)
With one foot in Washington and another one in Texas, Hutchison is out of step with the needs of Texas voters. KBH is ignoring her responsibility to Texans by refusing to serve Texas full-time in the U.S. Senate and using her time to run for Governor.
In fact, some newspaper editorials from across the state have already started calling out Senator Hutchison for her political cowardice:
- Amarillo Globe News: Quit Your Job, Sen. Hutchison
“This state needs both of its senators on the job, studying position papers and casting votes on important matters. Having one of them distracted by what is looking like a politically bloody fight for governor doesn’t do the state any good at all.”
- Austin American-Statesman: Some bad things here, too, Senator
“Yes, the senator has the right to do as she pleases. But the rest of us, including potential candidates, have the right not to have one politician gum up the works for her own political reasons.”
- Beaumont Enterprise: Hutchison should resign her Senate seat soon
“The best way for her to demonstrate her commitment to this contest would be to resign her Senate seat as soon as possible. Whatever the outcome of the governor’s race, Texas needs a full-time senator in that post until the term expires in 2012.”
- Dallas Morning News: Kay Bailey Hutchison’s office politics
“As long as U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison has “U.S. Sen.” in front of her name, she will face sticky situations that cause people back home to try to read her mind…Hutchison’s one-foot-in-one-foot-out position doesn’t make that difficult task any easier, but it’s the course she chose.”
KBH is famous for replying to constituents who write her letters with the same boring answer – “thanks for writing, but I’ll do it my own way.” Hutchison’s latest act of political cowardice is the capstone of a long career that has failed Texas, no matter where she is.
