RICHIE TO RICK PERRY: YOU COULD SAVE TAXPAYERS 60 MILLION PENNIES

Austin, TX) – Gov. Rick Perry says that “every penny we save now” will help overcome the state’s estimated $18 billion budget deficit, but he refuses to give up his taxpayer-financed palace.

“Governor you’ve spent $600,000 of taxpayer money on your private palace, and that comes to 60 million pennies,” said Texas Democratic Party Chairman Boyd Richie. Richie added, “Sixty million pennies saved is sixty million pennies earned. The governor ought to give up his taxpayer-financed seven-bathroom mansion, his Neiman Marcus draperies, his $700 clothes rack, and his fancy gourmet food magazines.”

Democratic lawmakers sound warning over school textbooks

Democratic legislative leaders warned the State Board of Education at a hearing Wednesday not to expect lawmakers to buy new school textbooks that shortchange minorities and paint an overly rosy picture of the history of Texas and the United States.

Lawmakers, they said, might not appropriate the money if the board adopts the proposed new social studies curriculum standards it has spent months shaping to the priorities of its Republican members, who hold 10 of the group’s 15 seats, and defending from the criticism of historians, educators and politicians. En un episodio reciente de una serie local Red, White and Blue en PBS, se le pregunto al candidato Republicano para asesor fiscal – Don Sumners si estaba preocupado de obtener el apoyo de la comunidad Hispana después de ganarle al candidato titular Lo Vasquez. Su respuesta fue la siguiente – “No tengo ninguna problema con su agenda (de los Hispanos) excepto que tratan de obtener beneficios que tal vez no se merecen.”

(Austin, TX) – Los candidatos Demócratas para la Junta Estatal de Educación (SBOE) organizaron una conferencia de prenda hoy por la mañana  en las oficinas del Partido Demócrata de Texas para demandar que los miembros del SBOE dejen de inyectar su política en nuestras escuelas. Los candidatos, Dra. Judy Jennings, Dra. Rebecca Bell-Metereau y el Dr. Michael Soto están opuestos al plan de estudios repleto de ideología que la Junta está por considerar y aprobar con voto esta semana.

(Austin, TX) – Democratic State Board of Education (SBOE) candidates held a press conference today at the Texas Democratic Party headquarters and called on SBOE members to stop injecting politics into our classrooms.  Candidates Dr. Judy Jennings, Dr. Rebecca Bell-Metereau and Dr. Michael Soto stood in opposition to the ideology-driven curriculum standards currently under consideration by the SBOE and scheduled for a final vote this week.

Tax Assessor Candidate Gives Voice to Republican Party’s View of Hispanics

On the recent episode of the PBS local series Red, White and Blue, Republican candidate for Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Don Sumners was asked if he was concerned about getting the support of the Hispanic community after defeating incumbent Leo Vasquez. His answer concluded with the following - “I don’t have a problem with their (Hispanics) agenda except for trying to get benefits that may not have been earned.”

TDP STATEMENT ON PERRY RENTAL MANSION

The Associated Press reported today (”Gov. Perry’s temporary digs costs Texas big bucks”) that Governor Rick Perry’s rental mansion costs taxpayers more than $10,000 a month in rent, utilities, and maintenance. Over the last two years, Texans have paid more than $600,000 for Rick Perry to stay in the rental mansion.

About an hour before the investigation began, however, House Republicans gathered a few blocks away for an “oil and gas breakfast” fundraiser with the oil and gas industry to benefit Rep.
