TDP STATEMENT ON SD 22 CULLAR WITHDRAWAL
August 20th, 2010

This afternoon, Democratic SD-22 nominee John Cullar submitted his certificate of withdrawal to the Texas Secretary of State. Texas Democratic Party spokeswoman Kirsten Gray issued the following statement:
“We maintain that the voters of SD 22 deserve a Senator who has lived in the district long enough to be qualified to serve in the Texas Senate under the requirements of the Texas Constitution. Although neither the Court nor the Republican Party filed any legal documents affirming his eligibility, the Court used a questionable technicality to issue a politically-motivated ruling yesterday that allows Brian Birdwell to remain on the ballot.
“The Republicans have done everything in their means to game the system and protect an ineligible Republican officeholder. In this race, the playing field is not level and the fight is not fair.
“We look forward to the day when SD 22 residents will have a real choice between eligible candidates for the Texas Senate, but that is not possible this year, when even our Courts are subject to the corrupting influence of complete Republican control.”
