TDP Acknowledges Black History Month

Endorses The NAACP’s Campaign To Register Bone Marrow Donors

The Texas Democratic Party acknowledges Black History Month and the varied accomplishments of African Americans in Texas.

Statement from TDP Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa:

The story of the African American community is core to the story of the Democratic Party, in the nation and in Texas. African Americans have led the nation’s progress to be more equal and more just. And the community’s civic involvement and support of Democratic ideals is a large reason why Democrats have been able to win and enact policies that benefit us all.

The Texas Democratic Party honors the continued work and leadership of African Americans, and their rich history of accomplishment. In particular we wish to honor their long history of over representational service in the armed forces.

In honor of Black History Month, the Texas Democratic Party joins with the NAACP in support of raising awareness around the need to register more African American bone marrow donors. Right now, only 8% of the nation’s 10 million registered bone-marrow donors are Black, and this creates a health care inequality that could literally mean life or death.

As the NAACP announced today:

We all have the power to save a life. The NAACP and its Health Committee have been committed to helping bring awareness to causes that make a difference. At the 2010 NAACP National Convention, a bone marrow drive was held to help raise awareness and make a difference in people’s lives. Since the convention there have been four different bone marrow matches thanks to the people who registered.

But the work of the NAACP ceases to stop and the process of registering for bone marrow donors is becoming easier, painless, and more time efficient. Swab a Cheek, Save a Life is an organization dedicated to finding matches for bone marrow transplants and raising the awareness amongst minorities to increase the registry.
