The Twelve Days of Cornyn: Six Hurricane Ravaged Homes

Twelve Days of Cornyn
Cornyn Grinch

On the Sixth Day of Christmas John Cornyn Gave to Me...

Six Hurricane Ravaged Homes

As Hurricane Rita victims brace for their third Christmas without a dime of aid to repair their devastated homes, the response from U.S. Senator John Cornyn has been a big, "Well, I guess you're scrooged." Not only did Governor Rick Perry and Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams fail to submit their hurricane expense request in time, Texas Republicans in Congress managed to secure only one quarter of what Texas needed to rebuild. [Houston Chronicle, 2/17/06]

When Cornyn promised so earnestly that the "entire Texas delegation will fight to correct the problem when Congress considers this funding legislation," he neglected to mention that he had personally urged President Bush to veto $1.5 billion in hurricane aid for Texas because of its cost, arguing that, "...he [Bush] could be a hero to an awful lot of people if he stands up and vetoes something."  [Houston Chronicle, 5/6/06, Dallas Morning News, 2/17/07]  Most recently, Cornyn voted against a spending bill allowing Texas communities to qualify for disaster assistance, saving Texas taxpayers an estimated $70 million. [Roll Call vote #126, 3/29/07]

Sadly, when it comes to helping Texas hurricane victims rebuild their lives, they're better off relying on Santa Clause for help than John Cornyn.
