Where are all the Democrats in Clay and Montague County? Are we cowering in fear that someone from the predominatly conservative Christain Right in our area will call us on our beliefs? Can I square my Christian beliefs with my social concerns. ABSOLUTELY! Do I believe in caring for the sick, the poor and believe that government has no place in deciding issues such as a woman's right to chose or allowing stem cell research? Again, my answer is unequivical and absolute - after much soul searching, prayer and Bible study. I often wonder if the fundalmentalist conservative right is trying to serve the same God that I do. OK. You get it. I am a spiritual being trying to walk the walk. Rather than set out on an anti-Bushie rant, I'll just say I agree with the Dixie Chicks and have from the beginning. I feared what would happen if Dub was elected and fell into a drepression for two weeks after Al Gore "lost". But NEVER in my wldest imaginings, did I think the Bush administration could be THIS bad. However, when I vote Democrat in the presidential election, I am hoping for a leader for ALL the people and for the good of the future for our entire country. Someone who will put people, our infrastructure, the survival of the entire planet before personal greed. Have you seen SICKO? GO. NOW. Take a Republican with you. No matter what you think of Michael Moore, health care is too important an issue to be divided by party lines. This is a human issue! Thanks for letting me get that all of my chest. I'm normally a guiet, retired, old English teacher, but even mean ol' English teachers can get fired up. Let's hope we can ALL get fired up in time to save this nation and take our traditional leadership role in the world. PS My family has been Texans for seven generations...unlike our President who is first generation. I don't think that counts as a real Texan, do you?

Remember the pretty cheerleader in high school that thought she could say anything and attack anyone and get away with it pretty smiles and sarcasm? This is Sara Palin. Her sneering smile and nasty low-blows made me ill. In general she makes me GAG!

But the tone of the entire convention has been like that. Rudy was just as bad. Attack the opposition and never discuss what the party will do for the problems this nation faces. Republican politics as usual and I'm sick of it!

Could we have reruns of the Democratic convention to show these people how civilized people behave and to help me get this nasty taste out of my mouth?
Tonight has been a historic night. Before you think I'm referring to the anniversary of MLK's "I Have a Dream Speech", or the fact a man of mixed race has gained the nomination of a major political party, I need to tell you a little story.

My little 87 year old Mother is a prime example of "The Greatest Generation". She grew up the eldest of six children of parents who provided for them as best they could in Fort Worth, Texas, during the horrendous years of the Great Depression. She married, had a child, and saw her husband off to fight in the Pacific in World War II, and like many Texans her age, she is a racist.

This week my family have watched each night of the convention, and tonight as usual Mother called to compare notes.

I had already determined to vote for Barrack Obama at the end of the Primary. Afterall,I am loyal Democrat! Obama is a very intelligent man. That is a very important point in his column in my opinion! Joe Biden has been chosen as our VP candidate. I like Biden and he has excellent experience in foreign policy and a good working knowledge of the workings on The Hill. That is a plus for voting the Obama-Biden ticket. Hillary and Bill enthuastically endorsed the ticket at the convention. Two more pluses. Then tonight everything changed. Now I get it. I understand the groundswell of support for Barrack Obama. He speaks the truth. He has the sincerity of his beliefs. I believe him when he says we are our brothers' keepers. I believe him when he says he wants to right some fundamental wrongs in our country. I have seen the light!

Mother began our conversation as usual by asking what I thought. I told her her Obama had sealed the deal for me and I have absolutely no hesitancy in supporting Obama for President of the United States, and as usual asked her what she thought.

My sweet little old Mother said Obama's speech tonight reminded her President Roosevelt. I just happen to know my mother thinks of FDR as a god, so I asked her if that meant she will vote for Obama. She said yes!

If my mother can see past the color of his skin to appreciate what Obama says, what he wants to do, then surely the rest of us can and should do everything possible to see Obama-Biden win!
We are now down to two candidates...I am torn. We look at Obama and see a fresh face, a dream for a better future, a diametric opposite for McCain. Looks good, major party endorements...BUT is this a man who can get things done? That's the key. We have no time to lose! (When I hear Obama say he will bring people together, I hear echoes of "I'm a uniter. Not a divider" and I shudder.) We want the same changes in the way our country runs its business as Obama, but as we all know CHANGE TAKES TIME. We don't have the luxury of that commodity. We must have someone in the White House who knows the current system and how to make it work to our advantage. I don't think Obama has those skills...YET. However, We are expecting great things from him in the future. Perhaps sooner than later.

Just for fun and something to think about:

President- Hillary Clinton

VP- Barak Obama

Attorney General- John Edwards
I'm excited by the current results of out little Democrat on-line straw poll. I didn't think John Edwards had a snowball's chance in...um... Texas... to be in the lead. Like many Dems, my sole concern has been who is the "most electable" candidate. Now I can take a deep breath and say "I support John Edwards."
Before you ask... Yes. I know how to edit. I was in too big a hurry to get out what I feel ina place where I feel safe in expressing my opinion. Check out my blog to see if you feel the same frustrations. Be gentle my friends...
