I always thought that politicians were a lot like slinkys: not much good for anything, but they can always bring a smile to your face as they fall down the stairs. I am determined that my campaign will be different. And so I am giving my campaign to the community, to work with non-profits, charities, schools, churches, and anyone else who may need a helping hand. Is helping to clean a park or teaching children to care for abandoned animals in the SPCA a good use of scarce campaign resources? Will making nursing home residents feel a little less lonely benefit my campaign? Will a scholarship fund really be the best way to use my hard earned campaign contributions? Absolutely. The energy and ideas of these volunteers will prove better than any newspaper ad how important community and family is to me. And it will bring us together: there is no partisan way to swing a hammer. No Democrat or Republican way to hold a hand. Win, lose, or draw, this campaign will be good for something. So, start watching for my “Arlan's Army” of volunteers. And do not hesitate to put them to work. They no longer work for me, now they work for you.
