Texas Democrats Launch Third Round of Endorsements for Local Candidates

Austin, TX-- Today, the Texas Democratic Party endorsed the third round of progressive candidates enrolled in our Project LIFT (Local Investment in the Future of Texas) program for the May 6th elections.

Project LIFT works with local party leaders and progressive partners to recruit, train, and support candidates – with a special focus on winning local, non-partisan races.

Meet the Texas Democratic Party’s Third Round of Project LIFT endorsed candidates:

  • Arnetta Henderson, College of the Mainland, Position

    • Arnetta is an alumna, former employee, and supporter of College of the Mainland. She plans to promote ethics, equality, and educational excellence at the College of the Mainland.

  • Linda Robinson, Bellmead City Council

    • Linda is an Air Force veteran and retired portrait photographer who got her college education thanks to her G.I. Bill benefit. She has been a proud Texan for 21 years, and a McLennan County resident for 11 years. This is her first bid for public office.

  • Oscar Del Toro, Pasadena City Council District G

    • Oscar and his family immigrated from Mexico in 2000, and became citizens in 2006. Oscar and his wife manage a local small business. He knows what it takes to fulfill the American dream and he wants everyone in Pasadena to have the same opportunity he had.  

  • Johnny Boucher, Grand Prairie ISD, District 4

    • Johnny has a passion for education. He is a doctoral student of education at Johns Hopkins, with an M.Ed from SMU. A Grand Prairie resident for nine years, Johnny is an award-winning, distinguished teacher in Dallas ISD.

  • Shirley Fleming, Killeen City Council, District 1

    • Shirley is running for re-election to continue making a difference. She is passionate about service, and wants to move Killeen in a new direction to continue to increase honesty, transparency, and fairness.

  • Carissa Picard, Plano ISD Board of Trustees, Place 1

    • Carissa is an attorney who practices in the federal courts, primarily consumer law. She is a single mother with a son in Plano ISD, and is passionate about creating bully free environments.

  • J. Darnell Jones, Pearland City Council, Position 3

    • J. Darnell is a recently retired Naval Officer with 24 years of military service. He is a lawyer with a strong passion for civil and constitutional rights for all people. He graduated from the University of Memphis with a B.A. in Political Science and earned his J.D. at John Marshall Law School.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“The Texas Democratic Party is proud to announce our next round of endorsements for Project LIFT. Today’s list of candidates is yet more evidence that progressives and community leaders are stepping up all across the state, fighting for the fair shot each Texan deserves.

“Trump Republicans should be nervous. The fight to push Texas in a progressive direction is active and in full force.

“The effort to build our party from the ground up is growing day by day. Our Project LIFT candidates are committed to knocking the doors and making the calls they need to win -- and start delivering real solutions to the Texas families in their communities.”
