Candidate Services Director

The Texas Democratic Party is seeking an experienced political operative to serve as our Candidate Services Director. The Candidate Services Director (CSD) leads our Candidate Services Team which directly engages and supports prospective and active Democratic candidates from their initial preparations for a run through early voting and GOTV — with a special emphasis on candidates running in strategically key districts.

Description: Given the increased tendency of candidates to announce earlier in the election cycle, it is critical that the Texas Democratic Party initiate communication with campaigns early, provide valuable guidance and tools (i.e., a “campaign in a box”), and build trust to secure candidate participation in a robust 2020 coordinated campaign. The CSD will lead the party’s engagement with candidates. The CSD will also participate in table conversations with Democratic and progressive allies, both state and national, with an interest in key Democratic races.

The position will be based in Austin and will require significant statewide travel. The CSD must also be able to manage a team of 2-5 direct-report, full-time staff, and often remotely; all managed staff will likely be based in Austin, but will travel frequently. The CSD must be able to complete projects under tight deadlines in a highly integrated and collaborative workplace while maintaining a positive attitude. The CSD will report directly to the Deputy Executive Director.

Salary: This position pays $55,000 – $60,000, commensurate with experience.
Employee Classification: This is a full-time position for the duration of the 2020 election cycle.
Start Date: ASAP
Application Process: Resumes should be emailed to [email protected]

Responsibilities:
The CSD will:

  • Work with county, state and national partner organizations on candidate recruitment efforts, with an eye for targeted pipeline development;

  • Manage and supervise a team of up 2-5 members staffers assigned to specific races to track, provide support and information; including our Project LIFT Coordinator, who assists Democrats seeking local, nonpartisan office in elections taking place every May and November;
  • Collaborate with the TDP’s County Affairs Director to assist with integrating campaigns with active county party voter contact operations;
  • Collaborate with the TDP’s Training Director on training content benefitting candidates and campaign staff, and participating in online and offline training events as needed;
  • Collaborate with the TDP’s Organizing Director to integrate local campaigns with the TDP’s 2020 Coordinated Campaign;
  • Work with the TDP’s Data Team to promote usage of TDP data products, including TexasVAN, guidance on strategy documents, and assist with analytics and institutional tracking of candidate;
  • Ensure proper communications between the campaigns and the caucus;
  • Manage or participate in weekly conference calls for various campaigns in a structured and professional fashion to assist with earned and paid media plans, field operations and fundraising;
  • Brief partners and donors on campaigns and activities;
  • Serve as point of contact for key external vendors, contractors and other stakeholders;
  • In consultation with the Deputy Executive Director, plan and oversee implementation of the TDP’s short- and long-term political programs as they directly relate to candidates and campaigns, and ensure alignment with key partners on political priorities;
  • Assure that the TDP, its mission, programs, and services are promoted broadly and positively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience;
  • At least three (3) cycles of candidate campaign experience, with increasing responsibility;
  • Two (2) cycles of experience in a management-level role on a statewide, congressional, or priority legislative campaign;
  • Proficiency with voter targeting, plan development, candidate and staff training, voter registration efforts, base-vote and get-out-the-vote drives;
  • Knowledge and use of VAN, including MyVoters and MyCampaign;
  • Reliable transportation;
  • Proven track record of effective staff management;
  • And an absolute commitment to complete the 2020 cycle at the Texas Democratic Party.

  • Deadline-driven and results-driven;
  • Able to stay calm under pressure in a fast paced environment with long hours;
  • Ability to bring structure in a growing and dynamic environment; and
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented individual.
