Almost two years ago, I sent the email below.
I can’t believe I’m writing you again to protect the Hazlewood Act. Late last week, Republican J.M. Lozano filed a bill that would slash veterans’ Hazlewood Education benefits. Our veterans and military families deserve better than Texas Republicans ripping college away from them and their families.
It’s not right, and not Texan to betray our veterans. I’m asking you to use your voice today and call Republican Representative J.M. Lozano’s office and ask him to dump H.B. 3766:
|Call Republican Representative J.M. Lozano's Office:
What to say, "Hi, this is [your name]. Can I speak to your Legislative Director? We must keep our promises to veterans and their families. I ask that your Representative dump H.B. 3766, which would gut the Hazlewood Act. Education opens the door to a better life to veterans and their families. Please fully fund the Hazlewood program.”

Hi %%firstname(there)%% --
Education benefits for Texas veterans and families are under attack.
Today, the day before Memorial Day, some of our colleagues in the Texas House of Representatives are going to vote to turn their backs on veterans and their family members. We need your help, right away, to convince them not to do that.
As a veteran, I know just how important education benefits like Hazlewood are for our fellow veterans and their families living in Texas. Education opens the door to a better life to veterans and their families.
Several years ago, the state of Texas created an education program called the Hazlewood Act, which helps pay tuition and fees for veterans, their spouses, and dependents. Unfortunately, the Hazlewood Act is under attack, and we need to act fast to save the integrity of this important program.
I know if you call your representative today and asked them to protect the Hazlewood Act, we can win this important vote.

make the call
What to say, "Hi, this is [your name]. Can I speak to your Legislative Director? We must keep our promises to veterans and their families. Please put Texas veterans and their families first this legislative session by voting to protect the Hazlewood Act. Education opens the door to a better life to veterans and their families. Please fully fund the Hazlewood program.”
When mom or dad serves in the military, the whole family serves with them. Texas Republicans want to take away the Hazlewood education benefit for thousands of children of veterans. That’s not right, and that’s not Texan.
Please support our veterans and their families this Memorial Day weekend by calling your Texas House Representative and asking them to protect the Hazlewood Act.
Thank you for all of your help today,
Texas Representative, El Paso
