AG Sessions refuses to disclose collusion with Texas AG Ken Paxton to deport DREAMers and end DACA

Austin, TX — This morning, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about the Trump-Russia scandal, cutbacks on community policing, and the firing of FBI Director Jim Comey.

Sessions drew rebukes from his former Senate colleagues when he consistently refused to answer simple questions. When asked about his role with the Texas Attorney General in ending DACA, the Obama-era program that protected hundreds of thousands of young people, Sessions was quick to call those conversations privileged.

“Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., asked Sessions whether he discussed the threatened lawsuit with the Texas attorney general before President Donald Trump ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. …Sessions won’t say whether he spoke with state officials who threatened to sue the administration if they didn’t end DACA.” [CBS News, October 18, 2017]”

Texas Democratic Party Deputy Executive Director Manny Garcia issued the following statement:

“The American people have a right to know if their Department of Justice colluded with Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton to abolish DACA, deport DREAMers, and tear families apart. This is nothing short of contempt of Congress.

“Americans believe DACA should be preserved, and immigrant youth deserve more than to be lectured on the rule of law from Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton who’s facing 99 years in jail for felony fraud.”
