Austin, TX — The Washington Post reports, “While parts of Texas are still submerged from the historic flooding wrought by Hurricane Harvey, four members of Congress who represent the state voted against sending it billions in federal disaster aid.” [Washington Post, September 8, 2017]

  • Republican Congressman Joe Barton (R-TX) voted NO on a $15.25 billion aid package for his fellow Texans.
  • Republican Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) voted NO on a $15.25 billion aid package for his fellow Texans.
  • Republican Congressman Sam Johnson (R-TX) voted NO on a $15.25 billion aid package for his fellow Texans.
  • Republican Congressman Mac Thornberry (R-TX) voted NO on a $15.25 billion aid package for his fellow Texans.

Texas Democratic Party Communications Director Tariq Thowfeek issued the following statement:

“It is sickening that any self-respecting Texan would vote against disaster relief for their neighbors in need.

“Our families, including my own, are struggling to rebuild their lives. Some have lost everything. No Texan should be left behind in the flood waters. We’re all Texans and Americans before we are partisans. This is absolutely shameful.”
