State Officials Take Money from Crucial Program to Peddle Anti-Abortion Agenda

Austin, TX – Texas state officials have quietly awarded more than $8 million to an anti-choice organization operating a network of clinics that use anti-choice propaganda to dissuade people from seeking abortion services. [Rewire, August 14, 2018]

Highlights:

  • “Fisher’s wish has been granted by state officials. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) on May 31 approved a $8,078,235 contract with Human Coalition to “expand services” and “increase the effectiveness” of the state’s Alternatives to Abortion (A2A) program.

  • The grant contract is funded by diverting $3 million from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), a federal program that provides cash assistance for families with low incomes.

Background:

This isn’t the first time state officials divert crucial resources from safety net programs in place to help our most vulnerable Texans to anti-abortion groups:

Texas Democratic Party Executive Director Crystal K. Perkins issued the following statement:

“We should be making it easier for women to receive the healthcare they need, not harder. It’s a shame that the state would divert necessary resources for low-income Texans to organizations with a track record of deliberately deceiving and manipulating women seeking healthcare.

Texas Republicans continue to peddle ideology over public health and in turn, Texans have to deal with the consequences of a dismantled reproductive healthcare infrastructure in our state.

“The right to an abortion should not solely exist on paper, it must be accessible and available.”
