Texas Democrats file lawsuit to stop Republican Party of Texas from rigging the ballot

Austin, TX — Today, the Texas Democratic Party filed suit in federal district court against the Republican Party of Texas and Republican Secretary of State’s office to ensure candidate filing laws are respected.

The Republican Party of Texas has decided to ignore the law and omit a candidate who properly filed for the 2018 primary ballot.

Yesterday, in court, the Republican Secretary of State’s office stated the Republican Party’s actions would be illegal, but argued the Secretary of State had no power to do anything about it.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“Texas Democrats will not stand idle while Republicans rig the ballot. Only voters have the power to choose who leads our state and nation, not politicians and party officers in backroom decisions. Last we checked, this was Texas not Russia.

“The Secretary of State and Republican Party of Texas should not be allowed to make a smoke-filled room deal. If state laws setting election deadlines mean nothing, then the Courts should rule so.

“This is about protecting democracy, not Republican Blake Farenthold’s vile actions. Farenthold has no business serving in public office, but the primary ballot is set and he failed to withdraw.”
