Austin, TX – Today, it was reported that “lawyers for the Trump administration say they will not be able to reunite dozens of children separated from their parents at the U.S. Mexico border by a court-ordered deadline Tuesday, in part because several parents have already been deported.” [Washington Post, July 10, 2018]
“Trump declined to directly answer a question about whether he intended to punish immigrant children, instead re-emphasizing his message of deterrence and defending federal immigration authorities.” (read more)
“The looming deadline has shed light on how Trump’s heavy-handed tactic of using family separation to discourage illegal immigration is a toxic mix of cruelty and incompetence…two out of three Americans abhor what Trump has done with these children.”(read more)
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“The Trump administration is grossly unprepared when it comes to the consequences of their cruel and inhumane family separation policy.
“Children should never be separated from their parents to begin with and they certainly don’t belong in jail. Trump’s continued tactic of using vulnerable immigrants as political bargaining chips is immoral. He and Republicans in Congress have made their values clear, and the damage they are doing to immigrant families is irreversible.
“Texas Democrats believe every single child should be reunited with his or her parent and are committed to fighting for a just, fair and humane immigration system.”
