DACA recipients wrongfully detained by Trump’s Border Patrol

Austin, TX — Yesterday, Trump’s border patrol detained 10 DACA recipients for approximately 12 hours at the Falfurrias, Texas checkpoint. [McAllen Monitor, September 11, 2017]

U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela (D-Brownsville) immediately took action and defended these DACA recipients’ rights during the frightening failure of Trump’s border patrol. Vela said, “It is clear that the DACA recipients in question were held for too long…[the federal government] must ensure that Border Patrol agents at all levels are informed that DACA is still in place for the next six months. DACA recipients cannot and should not be held for hours at checkpoints due to confusion over changes in policy.”

Texas Democratic Party Deputy Executive Director Manny Garcia issued the following statement:

“Living in fear is no way of living at all. Once again, America sees exactly why it is critical that Republicans put fringe politics aside and work with Democrats to pass a permanent legislative fix for DACA and DREAMers.

“DACAmented immigrant youth have rights and Trump’s border patrol needs to get the memo fast. There are no excuses.

“For the next six months, DACA recipients have full legal protections, but we must all be vigilant to ensure the Trump administration follows its own rules.”
