Austin, TX -- Today is Tax Day, millions of Americans are paying their taxes, and yet President Trump has refused to come clean and release his own tax returns. According to taxmarch.org, more than 125,000 people in more than 200 communities around the world marched on April 15 to demand that Trump release his tax returns.
“...before this administration even thinks of proposing any changes to the tax code, we should see what tax code provisions the president himself has been and is taking advantage of...We should not have to pay taxes for a government that ignores our interests and prioritizes instead the interests of our political leaders and the elites who support them.” [USA Today, April 15, 2017]
Congress has the power to demand that the Treasury release Trump’s taxes but increasingly vulnerable Republicans like Will Hurd (TX23), Pete Sessions (TX32) and John Culberson (TX7) have voted to give Trump a pass.
Today, Texans are gathering outside of Hurd’s office at 2PM demanding answers. Details for the event can be found here.
Texas Democratic Party Executive Director Crystal K. Perkins issued the following statement:
“While millions of Americans are fulfilling their civic duty and paying their taxes, Trump continues to hide who he’s in business with.
“This is not a report card that you hide from your parents. This is not partisan politics. These are tax returns and Americans are out in full force demanding that Trump finally shows the cards he’s been playing.
“Hardworking Texans won't look the other way while vulnerable Republicans like Will Hurd, Pete Sessions, John Culberson and the rest of Trump’s accomplices give him a free pass on undisclosed foreign entanglements. The FBI certainly isn’t looking the other way either.
“Trump Republicans have another thing coming if they think we’ll stay mum while they push a massive tax cut for their wealthy friends.”
