#ICYMI Five Democratic women start Texas Legislature’s first LGBTQ caucus

Austin, TX – Five Democratic women lawmakers formed the Texas Legislature’s first LGBTQ caucus yesterday. [Dallas Morning News, January 10, 2019]

Former State Representative, first openly gay Texas legislator, and Texas Democratic Party Legislative Director Glen Maxey issued the following statement:

“Representation matters. And y’all means all finally in Texas!

“Thirty years ago, I lost every job offer I had in the Texas Legislature because I was outed on national television during the debate on quarantine of people with AIDS . As the first and only openly gay legislator elected twenty eight years ago , to see Mary González, Celia Israel, Julie Johnson, Jessica González, and Erin Zwiener form the first ever LGBT caucus, I could not be more proud.

“This is a historic moment for our state government. Texas will be a better place to live, work, and retire because of the hard work and service of Mary González, Celia Israel, Julie Johnson, Jessica González, and Erin Zwiener.

“Texas Democrats will never stop fighting for equality and justice for all.”

Congratulations to the LGBTQ Caucus Members:

Mary González, Chair (HD, 75)

Celia Israel (HD, 50)

Julie Johnson (HD, 115)

Jessica González (HD, 104)

Erin Zwiener (HD, 45)
