New Poll: Texans Disapprove of Trump & Texas Republicans are already underwater

Austin, TX --  This week, Texas Tribune and the University of Texas released a poll showing “[m]ost voters in the country’s biggest red state are wary of President Donald Trump.” The majority of Texans disapprove of Trump’s job as President. Additionally, almost every top statewide Republican elected official is underwater, with the exception of Gov. Abbott who’s struggling to maintain a single digit lead. [Texas Tribune, June 16, 2017]

Key Highlights:

  • 51 percent of Texans disapprove of the job President Trump is doing in office.

  • “Cruz is also the leader in negative reviews, getting those from 44 percent of voters”

  • “Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Joe Straus have more negative than positive reviews”(see chart below for details)

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“The progressive energy across Texas is electrifying. Texans are rising up and demanding a fair shot to get ahead.

“Poll after poll show Texans have no confidence in Trump and Texas Republicans Cruz, Abbott, and Patrick to tackle the growing challenges facing our state. Republicans obsess with fringe issues and have presented no plan for working families while the economy has plummeted from 3rd to 21st.

“Trump Republicans are driving the country into chaos, and Texans from every corner of the state are fighting back. The Texas Democratic Party is laser-focused on building our campaign infrastructure for an outstanding midterm.”
