Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“52 years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. challenged us all to look into our hearts and understand that it’s wrong to deny our fellow Americans their most sacred right, the right to vote.
“LBJ, a bold Texas Democrat, took a stand for justice and signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It broke down barriers that kept Americans of color from the ballot box.
“Today, Texas Democrats remain committed to defending the vote. While Republicans in Texas and around the nation seek to do away with the Voting Rights Act, Democrats stand ready to fight back from the statehouse to the courthouse.
“On the 52nd anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, let’s honor the sacrifices of those who fought for us all by recommitting ourselves to defend our democracy and expand the vote. Today, we continue the march towards justice and a more perfect union.”
