Texas Republican’s Discriminatory Maps Back in Court

San Antonio, TX — This week, the Texas Democratic Party, Latino and African American elected officials, civil rights organizations, and concerned Texans will take on Texas Republicans’ discriminatory 2013 election maps. The trial will focus on the state house and congressional political boundaries.

The San Antonio Federal District Court previously ruled that Texas Republicans intentionally discriminated against Texas’ diverse new majority, drawing state legislative districts in 2011 to limit the voice of communities of color in their government.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“In 2011, Republicans dealt a deep wound to Texas and destroyed voters’ ability to elect candidates of their own choice. After the courts stepped in, Republicans again moved to further delay fair election maps and block the justice Texans rightfully deserved. Election maps were rigged, Texas’s diverse new majority was shut out, and all so that Republicans could cling to power.

“Today, Texans fight back again. Texas Democrats are proud to defend the voting rights of all Texas voters. We stand with Texas’s Latino, African American, and Asian American communities and the good civil rights organizations who represent them. Our cause is just, the evidence is clear, and we will prevail.”
