Top Latino Republican says “I didn’t leave my party, my party left me”

Austin, TX -- Lionel Sosa is part of a rapidly declining group in this year’s presidential election, Hispanic Republicans. Sosa, a Texas-based ad maker, worked on campaigns like Texas Senator John Tower and Ronald Reagan in 1980, and now, he feels alienated from the party that he was once a part of.

With Donald Trump at the top of the ticket, Sosa claimed, “I'll have to bid farewell, hoping that one day soon, it comes to its senses...our nominee is not really a Republican. Not a real conservative. He's just a shark, a self-promoter out to see how far his out-of-control ego can take him.” [Washington Post, June 22, 2016]

Sosa went on to say, “Instead of ‘Tear down this wall,’ the party promotes a new and bigger wall. A thousand points of light has been replaced by a thousand points of anger. In place of compassionate conservatism, our nominee promotes callousness, extremism and racism. And instead of a unifier, the party now cheers the ultimate ‘us against them’ proponent. Divisiveness incarnate.” [San Antonio Express-News, June 22, 2016]

Texas Democratic Party Deputy Executive Director Manny Garcia issued the following statement:

“Sosa is absolutely right: the Grand Old Party is dead. This is now Donald Trump's Republican Party. Trump is the face, voice, and soul of the Republican Party. For years, Texas Republicans have created the environment for someone like Donald Trump to thrive, and now they’re dealing with the consequences.

“Simply put, Trump only cares about Trump. If he runs the economy like his businesses, he will leave a trail of harm and broken dreams. He has built a campaign on racism, sexism, and xenophobia. He has the support of KKK leaders and incites violence among his supporters. Clearly, he’s not fighting for Texas families and it’s time Republicans recognize their party is imploding.

“There is widespread agreement: Donald Trump’s divisive and reckless rhetoric won’t make us stronger or deliver any will only tear this country apart.”
